Milky Way Over McWay Falls
Big Sur, CA, November 2015
“So there I was in Big Sur one moonless night with McWay Falls to myself...”
A lot of things need to come together just right for an image like this. I needed a clear sky and a moonless night. I needed to know where things are going to line up and when. I also need a great deal of flexibility in my schedule so that I could drop everything when the opportunity presented itself. Pressing the shutter button is just the start. It took me another 2 1⁄2 years to get the image the way I wanted it. This photograph is actually a composite of two photos. The foreground was at the tail end of sunset while the sky overhead 45 minutes later. The remnants of sunset remained over the horizon and off to my right for the next hour, only appearing in the photos. These sights and sounds will stay with me forever.
